Hannover 96 restarted their 2. Bundesliga campaign a week later than the majority of the other sides in the division, though they showed little rustiness in their first game back at Osnabrück on Saturday.
In a contest that delivered a thrilling climax, Die Roten came from 2-1 down to win 4-2 at the Stadion an der Bremer Brücke, scoring three times inside the last 15 minutes to turn the game on its head.
The victory was 9th placed Hannover’s third in a row, though their momentum and newfound confidence should be given a stiff test in their latest assignment at home to a re-energised Karlsruhe outfit.
KSC won a useful point at home to Bochum on Saturday, taking their haul to four points from their first two matches back in the saddle, and the relegation candidate’s positive re-start enabled them to move up to 3rd from bottom ahead of Wednesday’s tussle in Lower Saxony.
Hannover carry the 2. Bundesliga’s second worst home record into their latest test at the HDI-Arena this week, and their return of just two wins from 12 games on their own patch this season suggests they shouldn’t be backed to take maximum points against Karlsruher.
The goals markets for Wednesday’s fixture hold much more promise however. Both teams scored in a notable 75% of the matches Hannover contested on home turf since August, and in 11 of their last 16 second tier games overall since mid-October.
In addition, both teams found the net in 67% of Karlsruhe’s 2. Bundesliga away contests this term, and only Hamburg have kept their hosts out less often than KSC in 2019/20.
Having kept their opponents out just five times in 26 games and 4 times in 27 matches overall respectively this season, Hannover and Karlsuher’s inability to keep clean sheets is well established – and we think goals should be on offer for both teams when their porous defences share the pitch at the HDI-Arena on Wednesday.
That lack of defensive nous was evident when the sides played out a 3-3 draw in their reverse league meeting in October last year, and with little evidence of improvement in their performances at the back since, we’re tipping the teams to share the spoils again in another high-scoring 2-2 tie.
