Augsburg ended a four match losing streak in emphatic fashion on Sunday as they thrashed a hapless Schalke side 3-0 away from home, and they have a chance to move themselves even further clear of the relegation zone with a win over the struggling Paderborn on Wednesday.
Admittedly the hosts’ form record doesn’t read particularly favourably for them, but in fairness to them they have had to deal with a difficult run of fixtures. Four of their last five games have come against current top six sides, but they showed their true quality against 8th place Schalke on Sunday.
This leaves Augsburg some nine points clear of the automatic relegation places, and a win on Wednesday could potentially put them within four points of the Europa League qualification zone. Given their poor record against the big guns this might be a stretch too far, but they should be confident of getting one over Paderborn here.
The visitors, by contrast, look destined for the drop. They have picked up a meagre 18 points from 27 games this season, leaving them nine adrift of the safe zone with only five games left of the season.
Paderborn have picked up a couple of points since the return to Bundesliga action, but they remain without a league since in eight games and it’s difficult to see them bridging the gap between themselves and safety.
No other team have lost more times than Paderborn this season, and five of their 17 defeats have come in their last eight games. They have also lost four of their last six meetings with Augsburg, so we’re not predicting a positive outcome for the visitors here.
Augsburg’s overall home record is deceiving, too. They have only won five of their 13 home league games this season, but their six games at home against teams in the bottom half of the Bundesliga have yielded five wins and a draw. For this reason, an Augsburg win catches the eye.
Augsburg have averaged 2.33 goals per game in these six home matches, and they face a Paderborn side that have failed to score in five of their last 10 away days, making a 2-0 correct score prediction stand out.
